Set Apart in Christ

There is a major difference between OT and NT. In the OT, people had to do something to earn their position, but in the NT, Christ has earned the position and given it to us free of cost. We accept our position thankfully and behave accordingly

Ex.19:5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. 6‘And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.

God chose the Israelites to bless the whole world. God needs His remnant to show forth His glory to the world. In the OT, God put an “if”. Here, God says, “If” the Israelites obey Him fully, then they will be His treasured possession, a kingdom of priests, a holy nation, above all the earth.

In the NT, this “if” is removed forever. When the Israelites failed to obey Him, God changed His mind and chose His Levites as His kingdom of priests. When all of them failed Him totally, God sent His Son to pick up His holy nation to proclaim His glory to the world. When Jesus was here on the earth, He chose twelve from among the multitude, then He increased His election to 70, then 120, and finally many thousands at Pentecost. Now, all of us who trust in Christ have become His chosen generation. When Peter addressed the believers, he removed the word “if” and said, “you are” a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light (1.Pe.2:5,9; Dt.7:6; 14:21; 26:19). Though the Israelites were His holy nation, they missed the privilege of being a royal priesthood.

The word “eklektos” (chosen) in 1.Peter means “one picked out from among the larger group for special service or privilege. The Israelites missed this privilege because of their disobedience, but you gained it because of Jesus' total obedience. The ministry of priesthood was only for the specially chosen among the Israelites, but now, you have become His kings and priests (Rev.1:5-6).

Beloved, you must know who you are in Christ. You are His chosen one. He has picked you out of this world for His special privilege. This should excite your heart. When you are firmly rooted in this truth, you will never bother if people reject you.

You are His royal priesthood. In the OT, priesthood and royalty were separated. Some were anointed and chosen as kings, some had the anointing of priesthood. Now, because of your position in Christ, you have become both. You are God's royal race. The royal dignity and authority is implanted in your nature. You are God's sovereign over all your circumstances.

You are God's worshipping host. It's your great privilege to be a consecrated priest to offer up spiritual sacrifices of worship to God. To the extent you praise Him as a priest, to that extent you rule and reign as a king.

You are His holy nation. In the OT, only the Israelites were set apart for God, but now, because of His precious Blood, you, the gentile, have also joined His holy nation. Every Blood-washed child of God under heaven belongs to His nation (Phil.3:20).

You are His purchased special people. The word “segullah” (special) means, “personal property, special treasure”. It could also mean God's pocket money. He feels so homely with you, He uses you for His own pleasure. Another meaning is, “royal treasures, prized possessions of kings”. As the royal child of God, you must rejoice in this privilege. It should fill your heart with overwhelming gratitude. Jesus bought you as His own by His precious Blood and made you His prized possession, unconditionally.

Dear child of God, thank God today for every one of these privileges. Use your privileged priesthood-position and continually offer praises to Him. You are totally set apart from this sinful world. Never stoop down. Spend your time in God's special service.

Thank You, Lord, I am chosen by You and have become a royal priesthood to proclaim Your praises and display Your perfections to this world because I am in Christ.
